World EV Day 2024: Green transport is the way forward!

World EV Day blog 2

This year for World EV Day we decided to chat with our wonderful community to get the inside scoop on everything they love about driving electric! Each day this week we will be spotlighting a different community member and finding out what made them jump from ICE to EV!

Today we are chatting to Andrew Ebling, a green transport fanatic and EV early adopter!

Let's get plugged in...

How long have you been driving an EV?

Been driving an EV for over five years!

How has the public charging landscape changed in the time you've been driving an EV?

It's gone from being something you had to research, and know where to look, to something you come across by chance in every day life.

Of course, chargers aren't as prevalent as petrol stations just yet, but it's moving in the right direction!

Why did you make the move to electric vehicles?

I was gradually won over by EVNick on YouTube. We needed an affordable second car and used Zoes were coming onto the market. Our main car was a diesel and didn't cope well with lots of short journeys.

Initially 60 miles of range didn't seem like much - we even had to charge on the way home from picking it up, but it turned out to be perfect for everyday life with home charging.

What are your favourite things about driving an EV?

As a cyclist, zero emissions. But I'm also a techie and stereotypical early adopter of most things, including EVs!

What's the longest journey you've done in an EV? Tell us about it!

We drove 285 miles from Woking to the Lake District, with only 2 rapid charges in a Skoda Enyaq 80.

We could have done it in one, but the Lake District can be an EV charger desert, plus we wanted to arrive with plenty of charge at our destination!

Tell us your funniest EV driving story!

Being uncharacteristically late for work after journeying back from visiting family over a weekend, a few months after getting an EV, because I had made a catalog of newbie EV rapid charger errors.

I can remember sitting in a motorway service station, spooning in less than appetising porridge while constantly refreshing the Zoe app and wondering why the charging speed was a fraction of what it should have been. Fortunately my boss was a fellow EV early adopter and understood!

What is the biggest difference between fuelling up and charging up?

Your hands don't stink of diesel for the rest of the day, no matter how many times you wash them!
