World EV Day 2023 - competition winner!

World EV Day blog header

It's World EV Day! If you're new to the holiday - not to worry! World EV Day is a chance to celebrate the global movement to more sustainable road transport - and shout about the benefits of driving electric.

This year (2023), we opened a competition for one lucky Octopus Electroverse community member to win their dream EV road trip across Europe. All they had to do was show us the route using the Electroverse app.

Let’s get plugged in…

What was up for grabs?

It's an old misconception that electric vehicles are just city cars (i.e. not to be taken on long drives). In fact, with over 500,000 charge points on the Electroverse network, taking an EV on a multi-country road trip has never been simpler.

That's why this World EV Day (2023), we gave one lucky winner enough charging credit to cover their dream road trip to Europe and back!

We received a lot of submissions, with road trips ranging from the south of France to the Parthenon in Athens - some trips totalling more than than 6,000 miles! All possible using the Electroverse network.

However, there could only be one winner. So, let's get to it...

And the winner is...

Jon!

Jon's dream trip is to take his Kia EV6 from his home in Milton Keynes and make his way through France and Spain, down to Nazaré, Portugal, to see the big surf. This drive will see Jon cover around 1448.7 miles (one-way).

Nazaré is famous for its big waves - having some of the largest in the world for pro-surfers to tackle. The big wave season in Nazaré is between October and March.

The top three world records for the largest waves surfed have all been at Nazaré, with the top spot going to Sebastian Steudtner on October 29, 2020. The wave measured roughly 86 feet (26.21 meters).

The reason for the sizeable nature of Nazaré waves is due to an underwater canyon that is roughly 125 miles long and 3 miles deep. Owing to the difference in depth of the canyon, two waves are created at the bottom of the canyon and the continental shelf. When the two waves collide, this creates the big surf - something Jon wants to see!

You can read more about the Nazaré waves here.

Jon's planning to take this trip January 2024 - for those of you interested, we'll be following up with him post-trip to see how the journey was!
