Located in the centre of Nürnberg, Germany, this is one of the oldest and most popular Christmas markets in the country! Dating back to the 1530s, this gorgeous market sticks to tradition with its wooden stalls stuffed with sweet treats and perfect presents for all your family and friends! It’s also surrounded by beautiful architecture, with the gothic Frauenkirche overlooking the market.

Wander the markets under the famous Cologne Cathedral - the world’s third largest Gothic-style cathedral is certainly a sight to behold! 157 m tall, the cathedral towers over the market, providing an epic backdrop for an already beautiful market. On top of the classic Christmas market, there are scheduled stage performances ongoing in the centre, providing entertainment and diversity for the market goers!

Christmas Market on Rathausmarkt

Head to Hamburg, in the north of Germany, and discover the joys of this historic German market! With the smell of roasted almonds and mulled wine hovering in the air, and lights reflecting off of the gorgeous town hall, your senses will be entirely immersed in this festive wonderland! You may even be lucky enough to spot Santa Claus, flying across the market in his sleigh…

Spread around this city of love, there are multiple Christmas markets you can catch! It has been said that the best time to go to these markets is during December; when it truly feels the most festive and all the stalls are out and at their best. Piazza dei Signori, being the ‘main market’ of the city, will have plenty of pretty trinkets for you to marvel at and take home to your loved ones!

In the North of Italy, this little city, Bassano del Grappa, has beautiful scenery including the river Brenta flowing elegantly through its centre! One of the biggest markets in Venice, Campo Santo Stefano square becomes a huge Christmas village! This is a great market to go to if you love trying the local cuisine as there’s a whole section dedicated to selling local foods! So whether you fancy some specialty pasta, nougat or candied chestnuts, you know you’re eating well like a Venetian!

This Parisian Christmas market is huge! The biggest market in Paris, this seasonal pop-up is located right next to the famous Louvre - stretching across the entire north edge of the Tuileries Garden! What makes this market different from the others in this blog is the amount of Christmas-themed rides there are throughout the Garden - more than just your classic ferris wheel! Make sure you bring gloves too as your fingers may get a little chilly whilst you glide along the quaint ice rink (which has a separate section for young children!).

This is also a great place to pick up something special as many of the market stalls offer products that are only available in the festive period!

It’s also the perfect place to spend some time with your family, walking through the enchanted forest, visiting Santa Claus’ house and marvelling at the lights from the famous Ferris wheel at Cascais Bay!
