World EV Day 2024: Electric driving is a breeze on the NC500!

World EV Day 3

This year for World EV Day we decided to chat with our wonderful community to get the inside scoop on everything they love about driving electric! Each day this week we will be spotlighting a different community member and finding out what made them jump from ICE to EV!

Today we are chatting to Maurice Bertenshaw, a retired engineer and EV tech fanatic!

Let's get plugged in...

How long have you been driving an EV?

I have been driving an EV for over 5 years now!

How has the public charging landscape changed in the time you've been driving an EV?

When I started out with the EV it used to just be single charge points dotted around the place. Now you get large hubs with plenty of chargers pretty much most places you go!

Did you know?: The largest charging hub in the world is at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre boasting an astonishing 637 charging points.

Why did you make the move to electric vehicles?

Being a retired time served engineer I have always kept abreast of tech changes and the appeal of an EV was a no brainer for me. That first test drive totally convinced me!

What are your favourite things about driving an EV?

There are so many things but just to name a few:

  • Quiet, relaxed driving

  • Responsive drive

  • The tech in an EV is second to none!

What's the longest journey you've done in an EV? Tell us about it!

Dundee around the NC500 several times with B & B overnight stops. We also regularly travel 290 miles each way from Dundee to Manchester for football matches.

Did you know that the entire NC500 is 516 miles long (Or 830 kilometeres)!

Tell us your funniest EV driving story!

When my VW iD3 was in for a service I was given a petrol loan car. I got in, pressed the brake pedal, selected first gear and was confused why it did not move. I tried a few more times re-selecting first gear before giving in and asking a passing service assistant what I was doing wrong.

Reply was press the start button! Slightly embarrassed, the iD3 ignition comes on when you sit in it and starts when you press the brake pedal.

What is the biggest difference between fuelling up and charging up?

No stinky fuels to contaminate the hands. Also you can't fill an ICE vehicle tank at overnight reduced rates!
