In the quest to find sustainable transport alternatives, electric vehicles have triumphed as a beacon of hope. EVs come with the promise of reduced emissions and a greener future, but how do we get the most out of them?

To max out their cost savings and environmental benefits, we need to understand the nuances of efficient EV driving. In this guide, we'll explore the strategies and techniques to become a master of efficiency behind the wheel of an EV.

Let’s get plugged in…

What is efficiency?

We’re going to share tips on keeping your EV efficient, but first, let's discuss what efficiency means.

In a petrol or diesel motor, fuel efficiency is how far you can travel on the fuel in the tank. In an EV, efficiency affects how far you can travel on a full charge.

The simplest method to see an electric vehicle's efficiency is to work out the miles per kWh (the equivalent of miles per gallon). On average, most electric vehicles will cover between 3 - 4 miles per kWh.

The quick math: EV range ÷ kWh battery size = miles per kWh

For example: Volkswagen ID.3 has a range of 280 miles and a battery size of 77 kWh. 280 ÷ 77 = 3.6 miles per kWh.

Don’t worry - that's the math portion of the blog over, but for all the in-depth detail, head to our blog: How efficient are electric vehicles?

How to keep your EV efficient

Understand the range

Before you rev up and hit the open road, let's talk range! Your electric car's range is all about how far you can get on a single charge, but it's not set in stone. Factors like the weather, your driving style consistency, and the terrain can all shake things up a bit - just like they would in a fuel car.

So, plan your trips wisely and - if you plan on stopping for a break - keep an eye out for those EV charging stations along your route. A little prep goes a long way when you're cruising electric!

Keep your EV well-maintained

Before you embark on any journey – whether a leisurely cruise or a cross-country adventure – let's talk tyres!

It's a good habit to give them a once-over before hitting the road. Sure, some cars have fancy features that alert you when the pressure's low, but there's nothing like a visual inspection every now and then to keep things in check. Tyres tend to lose a bit of air over time, so it's worth consulting your car's manual to get the pressure spot-on.

Now, here's the lowdown: low tyre pressure isn't just a minor inconvenience – it can throw a wrench in your whole driving experience. From less effective brakes to a bumpier ride, and even, an increased risk of accidents - it's not something to brush off. If you're scratching your head about how to pump those tyres, fear not! Swing by a garage or seek out an EV expert for some professional TLC and guidance.

And while we're on the topic, don't forget to show your EV some love with regular servicing. Sticking to the manufacturer's guidance ensures every component – yes, even that mighty battery – is firing on all electrons. After all, a well-serviced EV is a happy, efficient EV!

Plan in advance

In addition to giving your EV some TLC, let's talk about the thrill of trip planning!

It's not just about getting from A to B – it's about doing it with finesse. Here's a pro tip: fire up your trusty Electroverse car app and let it lead you on a journey that's not just efficient but downright eco-friendly. Think direct routes, slower speeds, and a whole lot of battery-saving savvy.

But wait, there's more! Why stick to the same old boring highways when you can spice things up with a scenic detour? Picture this: a road less traveled, winding through picturesque landscapes, with a pit stop for a quick charge-up.

And guess what? Finding charging points is easy with the Electroverse app. Just a few taps and you're starting your adventure!

Get into good driving habits

When you're cruising in your EV, it's all about those smooth moves and savvy habits to keep things running like a fully-charged circuit. Keep your eyes peeled on the road ahead, anticipate any slowdowns, and ease into your brakes gently. Trust us, it's not just safer, but it keeps the whole ride feeling nice and chill for everyone.

And hey, about that accelerator pedal? Slow and steady wins the efficiency race! Resist the urge to floor it, and instead, ease onto the gas. Remember, the faster you go, the quicker your battery drains, so take it easy and watch those miles stretch.

Now, imagine you're cruising down a long stretch of road with nothing but clear skies ahead. That's when cruise control comes in handy.

Set your speed and let your EV handle the rest. So go ahead, kick back, and enjoy the ride – your EV will thank you for it!

Use regenerative braking

Let's talk about a cool tech feature called regenerative braking. Like a magic trick for your electric or hybrid ride, when you hit the brakes, instead of just slowing down, your vehicle actually converts some of that energy into electricity. Pretty neat, right?

And guess what? It works best when you're cruising in traffic, so those stop-and-go commutes become a little more eco-friendly.

Now, here's the kicker: if your car's got this nifty feature, slowing down smoothly means you're not just being a safe driver – you're also giving your EV a chance to top up its battery. A win-win!

Control your climate

You might be thinking ‘How do I keep my electric vehicle nice and cosy, without draining the battery?’

Picture this: it's a scorching day, and your EV's parked in the sun. Instead of hopping into a sweltering cabin, why not pre-condition it? That's fancy talk for setting your preferred temperature while your EV's juicing up.

When you're ready to hit the road, you'll step into a cool oasis without sapping your battery's power.

Now, when the mercury drops, you've got options too. Consider snuggling up with seat and steering wheel heaters if your EV's got 'em. They're way more energy-efficient than blasting the whole cabin with heat. It's like wrapping yourself in a warm hug while keeping your EV's battery happy.

Monitor your energy consumption

Are you a data-driven driver? Let's discuss how to unlock the power of real-time energy info in your EV.

Here's the scoop: many electric cars come equipped with nifty features that give you the lowdown on energy consumption as you drive. Pay attention to this treasure trove of info! It's like having your own personal coach, showing you how your driving style impacts your EV's efficiency.

Now you're armed with all the tools and knowledge needed to cruise around in an EV as efficiently as possible. Lets drive smarter, not harder!
